i agree with your opinion that if marty comes back we should get a younger goalie like harding to be a stopgap and see how that works. Even if marty does retire i think we shouldnt re-sign the moose and get younger in net.

I know we are missing some key players, and have played a bunch of games in a short period, but we did have some trouble scoring against weaker teams and hopefully we dont go back to that, scoring 2 goals vs edmonton and the jets isnt exactly a confidence boost, it was very good that we came out with the wins (especially regulation vs jets) but we need to get our lines going for when we face harder teams and better defensive teams

kovy played a great game, he was noticeable almost everytime he had the puck and made some nice passes, especially to tallinder before or maybe it was salvador (who steve called samalela (sp) or it sounded like that)

larsson

lets keep on winning

He should go out while he is playing at a decent level of hockey. I'm not sure we can win with Marty in net during the playoffs. I would prefer to let him retire and get another starter. He has been to important to the organization to put him in a back up role.

Quite frankly, it doesn't matter if Marty retires or not because we won't have a true number one for multiple years. The free agents available next year are all 1Bs or backups unless we add through a trade which might not be the best idea seeing that we have other areas to address on the team as well.

That's why you get Brian Elliot, Jonas Gustavsson, Josh Harding, or Ray Emery. All those guys COULD be number ones. You get two of the four and you just hope that they capitalize on their opportunity and thrive. However, I have my doubts on Harding being a product of Yeo's trapping system, like Bryzgalov and M. Smith with Tippett.

I agree with everything you're saying Todd. If Marty comes back and plays 40 games, and 30 of them are good games.. i can live with that. thats like going 3-1.. we can manage.

I REALLY hope we go strong after Harding.. really strong. He's a good goalie. I watched him play a few games and I have him on 2 of my fantasy teams. He can be a stopgap for a few years if need be.

We must hope and pray that Lou doesn't get too confident with our prospects and doesn't jump the gun thinkin Kinkaid, Clermont, or Wedgewood is ready.. when I really doubt they will be. Brodeur/Harding isn't much different than Backstrom/Harding. The younger Harding is used to playing with a vet. I think it would be the perfect fit, and perfect transition. When Brodeur retires, hopefully after the 2012-2013 season, Harding should be ready to take on a starting roll and have one of our prospects as his backup. Depending on his performance, we could have Harding for a number of years. Who knows, he seems to have potential to be a good starter. Maybe we end up with a Quick/Bernier-type combo!

dream big.

and after you're done dreaming of goalies.. . dream of Zach and Kovy tearing it up on separate lines, consistently scoring 3+ goals a game.. and going 7-2-1 for the rest of the season.
I'm a believer!

Smith had some great showings as a Dallas Star backup. I remember him being especially good against us. I think he just struggled in Tampa. He's made some big saves in Phoenix. I doubt he's a product of their system.. he's too consistent. I think he's just settled down and is playing his game.

i think i may have accidentally pressed the ! button but whatever it will be fine

Id like to get harding and nittymati (sp) as harding looks to be a good capable goalie when he is healthy (and we have to see if he could even play a bunch during the season) and nittymaki has some veteran qualities and is also a decent goalie when he plays, he wont wow you but he gets the job done

i have a feeling elliot will be signed prior to FA, gustavsson im worried about with his heart condition and injuries + he isnt the best at high shots and is too deep alot

Maybe he is playing well, but Phoenix's system is making him look a lot better than he is.

Just look at Bryzgalov.

For Gustavsson, he is a big ass dude. If he learns to move out, which our goalies do a LOT of, so the goalie coach might be preaching it, he will almost be unstoppable.

It's down to Harding/Nittymaki/Emery/Gustavsson/Elliot and maybe Vokoun, but he'd probably want too much money.

Agreed, if Marty coming back he's coming back as a back-up to another veteran goalie until one of our younger prospects (Kinkaid,Wedgewood,Clermont) are ready.

Just look at Bryzgalov.

Bryzgalov is a mystery. He was good in Anaheim too, but they had Nieds and Pronger. Maybe he just struggles with the system in philly.. the adjustement.. who knows. The D isn't stellar in Philly right now either.

The reason I don't want Marty back is the coach isn't going to relegate him to back-up duties. He just isn't. Marty wants to be the starter, and I don't think he could swallow his pride and have another goalie play more games than him.

Ideal situation.

Vokoun for 1 year 3 million.
Harding for 3 years 9 million total.

That way, you can give the back-up duty to Kinkaid, as he will have 2 years of pro experience, and get him primed up to NHL duties. Or you just sign a back-up if Kinkaid isn't ready.

It looks like New Jersey Devils GM Lou Lamoriello is at least looking at how much Zach Parise would fetch on the trade market, if it comes to it. The Ottawa Sun's Bruce Garrioch writes, "League sources say Lamoriello has been gauging what Parise could fetch, but hes in a difficult spot because the Devils are in the thick of a playoff race and it would be tough to trade an impact player for prospects."

Parise is an impending unrestricted free agent and without a contract in place, Lamoriello can't be faulted for looking at his options. But the Devils are likely trying with some urgency to get a deal done, and Parise has said -- at least publicly -- that he wants to re-sign. However, it's possible Parise wants to explore free agency before he makes any decisions, at which point many people feel the Minnesota Wild would be a contender to last the star forward, since Parise is a native.

I like the idea of getting Vokoun but I really don't think he'll accept another 1yr deal. I think this time he'll be looking for a longer deal. You might have to give him or Harding a 3yr deal and have another "cheaper" goalie(maybe Frazee) back him up until one of the others are ready to start. Probably Wedgewood/Clermont/Kinkaid won't be ready next year but maybe the year after and we would still have a veteran on the team (Harding/Vokoun) to compete with.

What other areas do we need to address other than RW? On D we have Volchenkov, Greene and Tallinder signed for the next few years. We also have Larsson who should be keep getting better. We have a lot of prospects on D too. At center we are deep when healthy. At LW we are deep as any team in the league. Goaltending is the biggest question mark going forward. All of our goalie prospects are 2, 3+ years away.

Marty is a product of a trapping system.

Also, Bryzgalov was good before they were trapping in Phoenix.

You don't think we need another good defenseman?
